          Charles J. Hardy practices in the areas of real estate, commercial law and civil litigation.  Mr. Hardy advises clients throughout the United States in matters pertaining to retail and residential real estate development, leasing, real estate financing, regulatory requirements and business planning.  In addition, he assists clients in evaluating potential claims and defenses arising out of commercial disputes, and represents plaintiffs and defendants in trials and appeals in both the state and federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies and in arbitration.

          Recently, Mr. Hardy represented a developer seeking to open a major mining facility in Pennsylvania, assisted civic groups and other interested parties seeking to require urban developers to comply with historic preservation requirements in Philadelphia, brought a federal lawsuit under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act on behalf of a rapidly growing church which had been denied permission by the local authorities when it sought to expand its facilities and advised a major national shopping center owner in managing the modification and assignment of leases of its anchor tenants.  In addition, Mr. Hardy has represented heirs to significant estates in connection with will contests and has represented decedents' estates in a variety of real estate matters.

          Mr. Hardy is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Middle District of Pennsylvania, as well as the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.  Before joining Sprague & Sprague, Mr. Hardy served as the Assistant Solicitor responsible for state regulatory programs in the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement of the United States Department of the Interior.  Mr. Hardy is a 1973 graduate of the Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and is a graduate of Haverford College.
